The Federal Government has been urged to establish more employment-driven initiatives to mitigate the economic hardship facing Nigerians.

The call was made by Otunba Adetunji Oyebanjo, President and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIOD) Nigeria, during the institute’s annual health walk, tagged “Walk for Life 2025,” in Abuja.

Oyebanjo noted that while recent economic indicators show improvement, urgent attention is still needed on unemployment and insecurity, two key factors affecting business growth and overall wellbeing.

“From a stakeholder’s standpoint, we have seen improvements. Inflation is down, GDP growth has picked up, and government revenue has increased,” he said. “But there are still areas requiring urgent attention, especially unemployment. Government must create an environment where businesses can thrive and, in turn, employ more people. Security is also vital; without a safe environment, businesses simply cannot grow.”

He added that CIOD, established to enhance the capacity of directors in the public and private sectors, now boasts a membership of over 4,000 professionals nationwide.

The Chairperson of CIOD’s Abuja Chapter, Mrs. Nwandoh Chukwurah, said the “Walk for Life” initiative promotes wellness, healthy living, and professional networking among directors and industry experts.

“Health is wealth. As leaders and directors, staying fit is essential. This initiative helps us maintain optimal health while fostering connections,” she stated.

Participants praised this year’s outing and called for the continuation of the event, which featured health talks, fitness sessions, music, games, and social interactions.
