…Sparks Interest Across Judicial Circles
By Benjamin Njoku
A newly released legal encyclopaedia authored by Nigerian scholar Deji Jayeoba is attracting significant attention across the country’s legal and academic communities, following a detailed professional review by renowned law professor Sunday Fagbemi, who described the book as “a masterpiece of research, insight and practical guidance for navigating the complexities of legal drafting.”
The work, titled “Encyclopaedia of Modern Pleadings, Precedents and Practice (2nd Edition)”, was published earlier this year and is already being hailed as one of the most comprehensive drafting resources to emerge from Nigeria’s legal profession in recent times.
A Major Contribution to Legal Knowledge
In his published review, Professor Fagbemi noted that the encyclopaedia “sets a new standard for excellence” in legal drafting and document practice. He commended the author’s rigorous research process, his command of procedure across jurisdictions, and his ability to translate complex drafting principles into practical, accessible guidance for lawyers at all levels.
According to him, the book is “not just a compilation of documents, but an indispensable tool that elevates the quality of drafting within Nigeria’s legal system.”
He further described the encyclopaedia as “a universal companion for legal practitioners nationwide”, citing its breadth of precedents, analysis of contemporary standards, and inclusion of real-world examples as reasons for its rising relevance.
Growing Recognition from Practitioners
Since the publication of the review, the book has gained traction among practitioners in state ministries of justice, private law firms, and legal training institutions. Several lawyers who spoke with this newspaper described the work as “timely,” “highly useful” and “an essential addition to the modern lawyer’s library.”
A senior practitioner in Abuja, who requested anonymity, said:
“It is rare to find a single volume that combines this level of research, procedural accuracy, and practical relevance. Many of us have been recommending it to younger colleagues.”
Legal educators at various law faculties have also indicated interest in integrating parts of the book into their drafting and civil procedure modules.
About the Author
Deji Jayeoba, who has authored several law books, is known for his deep scholarship and practical orientation. He is currently pursuing advanced graduate studies in the United States that will culminate in the award of a PhD in law.
While speaking to this newspaper, he said the book was born out of his commitment to bridging the gap between theoretical drafting knowledge and the realities of legal practice.
“My goal was to create a resource that lawyers can rely on for clarity, confidence, and precision when drafting,” he said. “Every practitioner, from the youngest counsel to the most experienced litigator, deserves access to materials that simplify — not complicate — the process.”
A Resource Poised for Long-Term Impact
Beyond its academic and professional value, the encyclopaedia is being seen as a work that could influence legal drafting practice and training for many years. Professor Fagbemi’s review concluded that the book “should proudly grace every legal professional’s bookshelf” and predicted it would serve as a timeless reference “destined to benefit generations to come.”
As interest continues to build, analysts say the publication’s warm reception demonstrates a growing recognition of scholarly contributions emerging from Nigeria’s legal community.
