Seasoned petroleum engineer, Yomi Akinnurun, with over 12 years of expertise in optimizing hydrocarbon extraction, has advocated sustainable energy solutions to transform Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

Disclosing this in a statement recently, he pointed out the need for a forward-thinking approach that balances technological advancement, sustainability, and local capacity building in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

“To thrive, Nigeria’s oil and gas sector must prioritize sustainability, embracing gas monetization, carbon capture, and renewable energy integration to align with global energy transition goals,” Akinnurun emphasized.

He also stressed the importance of accelerating digital transformation by integrating AI and machine learning for predictive reservoir modeling and real-time monitoring.

He said: “Investment in training programmes is crucial to developing a skilled workforce, while stronger public-private partnerships can drive research and innovation.

“The Nigerian oil and gas sector faces significant challenges in its quest for sustainability.

“One of the major hurdles is the lack of effective gas monetisation strategies, leading to significant flaring and environmental degradation.”

Akinnurun opined that gas monetisation and carbon capture is therefore a critical step towards addressing this challenge.

“Furthermore, the sector’s reliance on traditional extraction methods has led to declining production levels and increased environmental concerns.”

Akinnurun emphasized on the need for digital transformation and the integration of AI and machine learning to help optimize production levels, reduce waste, and improve environmental sustainability.

In addition, the development of local capacity and expertise is important to the success of sustainable energy solutions in Nigeria.

Akinnurun believed that through efficient training and development programs, we can help build a skilled workforce, capable of driving innovation and growth in the sector.

He called on government  to adopt and leverage sustainable energy solutions, with a focus on reducing environmental degradation and promoting economic growth.

Akinnurun asserted that the adoption of sustainable energy solutions in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector requires a collaborative effort from all stakeholders.

Akinnurun’s expertise in production optimization has led to significant achievements, including a 400% production boost in the Abura Field through wax cutting and microemulsion technology.

He has also pioneered Nigeria’s first successful ESP artificial lift deployment, increasing output by 500 bopd.

In recognition of his contributions to the industry, Akinnurun has received several notable awards, including the SPE Africa Regional Production and Operations Award in 2021, and has been recognized for his technical papers, including one on microemulsion technology and gas flaring reduction, published by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

Akinnurun is a seasoned petroleum engineer with over a decade wealth of experience in the oil and gas industry, specializing in production optimization, reservoir management, and well intervention engineering.
