…Expands Efforts to Combat Gender-Based Violence in Northwest

A leading human rights organization, Global Rights, Nigeria, has identified gender-based violence (GBV) as a key factor driving insecurity in Nigeria.

To tackle this, the group has launched an expanded initiative in the Northwest, covering Katsina, Kano, Sokoto, and Kaduna states.

Speaking during a two-day capacity building training on GBV Community prevention and response for members of the CDC and Law enforcement, in Abuja, Program Officer, Global Rights, Noya Sedi said the project aims to prevent GBV, respond to survivors, and empower women in peace-building.

She highlighted the establishment of Gender-Based Violence Response Committees in communities to address violence and improve support systems for victims.

“GBV is both a cause and consequence of conflict. This initiative focuses on reducing GBV and fostering a more peaceful, resilient society where women play active roles in conflict resolution,” she said.

A family lawyer and member, International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Chioma Onyenucheya-Uko stressed the importance of legal awareness, noting that many victims remain silent due to ignorance of their rights.

She emphasized the need for community leaders and law enforcement to be well-trained in identifying and handling GBV cases.

According to Global Rights, the initiative will help curb GBV, promote legal awareness, and strengthen communities in tackling the root causes of conflict.
