Nigerian researcher, Opeyemi makes strides in medical field with focus on Glioblastoma cure

By Ayo Onikoyi

In the ever-evolving landscape of medical research, few individuals stand out for their unwavering passion and commitment.

Among them is Opeyemi Iwaloye, a Nigerian researcher whose dedication to the field of medicine is not only commendable but also yielding remarkable results.

With a background in Biochemistry from Adekunle Ajasin University and a Master’s degree from Federal University of Technology, Akure, Opeyemi’s journey in the medical field began long before he embarked on his current pursuit to find a cure for recurrent Glioblastoma (GBM).

Before his departure from Nigeria in 2022 to pursue his PhD, Opeyemi held key positions as a Senior Research Scientist at Teady Bioscience Research Laboratory and served as a Part-time Lecturer at Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti.

His seven years of experience in pharmacology, computer-aided therapeutics, and molecular biology laid a solid foundation for his groundbreaking research endeavors.

But that was not all about the man who seems to be driven by a desire to make a difference and touch lives positively.

For him, making the world safe is one thing, identifying  knotty problems in the medical field and providing solutions is one aspect of his job he hold dear.

Speaking on his research which focuses on focuses on identifying compounds that could modify signaling pathways associated with cancer, diabetes, and SARS-COV-2.

He had over the years collaborated  with renowned researchers in Nigeria, including Dr. Elekofehinti.

But that was not all, Opeyemi has co-authored 45 scholarly articles, garnering over 600 citations and attracting attention for potential therapeutic compounds in managing diabetes and cancer.

His contributions to the advancement of research in Nigeria are equally notable.

In his words “ I have partnered with institutions like Jaris Computational Biology and Teady Molecular Bioscience to provide training to over 600 researchers. I want to keep emphasizing computer-aided drug design for cancer and diabetes management”, he stated.

Opeyemi’s dedication has not gone unnoticed.

He was recognized as one of the top 375 researchers in Nigeria from 2017 to 2022, with one of his publications holding the distinction of being the most frequently cited and downloaded article in the Pathophysiology (MDPI) journal.

His academic prowess earned him prestigious scholarships, including the Russia OpenDoor PhD scholarship in Biology and Biotechnology and the Blazer Graduate Research Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he is currently pursuing his PhD.

As the world continues to revolve and health challenges aggravate, Opeyemi said he is focusing  on finding an innovative immunotherapeutic approach for the treatment of recurrent Glioblastoma (GBM), funded by The Brain Tumor Charity.

He observed that with a five-year survival rate of only five per cent, “GBM poses a formidable challenge in oncology, driving Opeyemi’s determination to improve patient outcomes.”

In his words, “I am excited about finding an effective treatment for GBM to improve patients’ survival outcome.”

Opeyemi Iwaloye’s journey exemplifies the power of passion, grit, and relentless pursuit of scientific excellence in the quest to alleviate human suffering and conquer medical challenges.
