Enugu—Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State has promised an upward review of NYSC members’ allowances in the state.

Chime made the promise on Monday in Enugu when the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Nnamdi Okorie-Affia visited him.

He said the upward review of the N4,000 allowances of corps members serving in the state would be in the spirit of the implementation of the new minimum wage.

“In the spirit of the minimum wage, I believe that also has to be reviewed, but it is not something I will sit down here and do. I promise you an upward review of the state allowances to the corps members,” he said.

Chime called on incoming local government chairmen in the state to make building of corps members’ lodges their priority projects.

He said the government, in its bid to ensure adequate security during the orientation of corps members, would tackle the issue of illegal occupants of buildings inside the camp ground.

Earlier, the Director-General of the Service, Brig.-Gen. Nnamdi Okorie-Affia commended the governor for his efforts toward ensuring adequate security of corps members in the state.

He urged the governor to assist the service in providing potable water, generating set at the orientation camp and also to renovate the NYSC secretariat.

“As part of my nationwide tour, I am in Enugu State to inspect NYSC facilities in preparation for the orientation exercise for the 2011 Batch ‘C‘ corps members that is coming up in November.

“I felt it was necessary for me to come and see you and to thank you Sir, for your support for the scheme in providing a conducive environment for the operation of NYSC scheme in Enugu State,” he said.

The Director, Corps Mobilisation of the NYSC, Mrs. Elizabeth Adimora, South-East Area Coordinator of the Service, Mr. Emmanuel Obi and the Enugu State Coordinator of NYSC, Mr. Akin Olowo-okere accompanied the Okorie-affia on the visit.
