BRUSSELS  (AFP) – Doha have all the infrastructure in place to successfully host the 2017 world athletics championships, the president of the Qatar bid committee said  on Friday ahead of the final Diamond league meet of 2011.

Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said that it would be a “new frontier” in world sport for the top Olympic sport to be held in the Middle East.

Doha already have the venue – the Khalifa Stadium – while bid rivals London were not certain of maintaining the athletics track constructed for the 2012 Olympics, he said.

The IAAF will announce the host city in Monaco on November 11.

Sheikh Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said that the Khalifa Stadium had air conditioning system in place for the championship which would take place mid-September. The marathon which traditionally takes place in the morning would be scheduled later afternoon.

He added that hosting a world championships would also “give added value” to Qatar’s bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games.

Qatar were snubbed by the International Olympic Committee in their bid for the 2016 Games despite tying with Chicago for third place and ranking ahead of Rio de Janeiro in grading by the IOC’s evaluation commission because of their insistence that the Games move to October.

Qatar have already been chosen to host the 2022 World Cup.
