ABUJA-PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, Senate President, David Mark, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, are among dignitaries expected to grace this year national workers’ day celebration, otherwise known as May Day, coming up Sunday, May 1.

Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, which disclosed this in a statement yesterday, said a symposium on the theme of this year’s celebration; “Growing the National Economy for Job Creation and Peoples Welfare”, featuring prominent experts and scholars will hold on Thursday, April 28.

NLC in the statement by its Head of Information and Public Relations, Chris Uyot, said on Wednesday April 27,  there would be a procession by workers around Abuja and environs to sensitize and mobilize Nigerians on the significance of Workers’ Day.

The statement said the May Day rally would be addressed by the President of NLC, Comrade Abdulwahed Omar, and the President-General  of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Comrade Peter Esele.

The statement read in part: “ On Sunday, May 1, 2011, Nigerian workers will join working people all over the world to mark Workers’ Day.  The event, which will be held throughout the country, will be attended by all workers, professionals, students, market men and women, as well as members of civil society organisations.

“The National May Day will take place at the Eagle Square, Abuja. Expected to grace the occasion as special guest of honour is the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan; the Senate President, Senator David Mark and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole and others.”
