Bauchi—Bauchi state Police Command has arrested one Abraham Sunday at a checkpoint along Maiduguri road in Darazo Local Government of Bauchi State for impersonating a captain in the Nigerian Army.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Barau who disclosed this to newsmen yesterday while parading the suspect before journalists at the Bauchi Police Command, said that the suspect was arrested on November 6 at a checkpoint.

According to him, the items found in his possession after his arrest included a Nigerian Army identity card, indicating the rank of a captain,  with Number  NA /1382, bearing Abraham Sunday, a camouflage jungle cap, three hundred and five (305) bundles of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and a Haynesy  Honda car.

Barau said the suspect, who is an indigene of Anambra State was travelling to Maiduguri, Borno State, when he was apprehended by Police officers.

The suspect, Abraham Sunday who admitted that he was impersonating an officer of the Nigerian Army, however, denied being in the possession of Indian Hemp and a stolen car.

‘Why I did it”

He said: “The fake Army identity card and the army cap normally assist me in business because my business involves travelling to Togo to buy cars and bring them to Maiduguri for sale. It was my friend who gave me the identity card, the cap and the car. He also helps me in bringing in the vehicles to Nigeria.”

On the Indian hemp he said: “The owners of the car, who offered me a lift from Bauchi to Maiduguri, were the ones who put the Indian hemp in the car. They were only two inside the car that picked me. I only joined the car as a passenger, because they were also going to Maiduguri.

“They are the owners of the Indian hemp and they all ran away when I was arrested by the Police last week. I am pleading for forgiveness now. The devil pushed me in to this act.”
