OAU wins 2026 varsities STEM duel competition

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has emerged overall winner of the 2026 University Duel Competition in STEM.

The institution clinched the title after an 11-week tournament involving 62 universities across Nigeria.

Speaking at the award presentation ceremony held at the Oduduwa Hall on Friday, the founder of STEM Africa Initiative, Oladapo Ojo, said true national progress depends on Nigeria and Africa transitioning from technology consumption to technology creation.

He said the competition was designed to encourage students to appreciate the value of STEM education and its role in national development.

Ojo also acknowledged the support of MTN Nigeria as a sponsor of the initiative.

According to him, the programme is aimed at inspiring young people and demonstrating the practical benefits and transformative potential of STEM disciplines.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. J.A. Odedire, commended MTN Nigeria for its sponsorship, describing the event as a major milestone for the university.

He noted that OAU achieved a double victory by winning both the University Duel and Smart Challenge competitions.

He added that the institution placed third in the 2025 edition before improving to win the top position in the 2026 competition.

One of the participants, Quayum Alli, speaking on behalf of other award recipients, expressed appreciation to the sponsors for supporting the initiative and providing a platform that promotes academic excellence and innovation.

A total of 186 students from 62 universities participated in the competition, where they were tested in Applied Mathematics, Data Analysis, General Knowledge, and Verbal Reasoning, aimed at bridging academic learning with practical digital skills for national development.
