Kayode Ogunyankinnu named 2024 most outstanding cassava farmer

As Nigeria grapples with food insecurity fueled by climate change, regional instability, and economic dependency on crude oil, innovative agricultural efforts are emerging as a beacon of hope.

One such initiative is led by Mr. Kayode Ogunyankinnu, the chairman of Lastresort Global Resources Ltd, who has made significant strides in cassava farming.

Operating over 500 hectares of cassava farmland in Ondo State, Mr. Ogunyankinnu has committed to combating food shortages by making staple foods affordable and accessible to Nigerians.

His company, known for producing Geovita Foods, is a testament to his resolve to address hunger and inflation through agriculture.

In recognition of his contributions, Mr. Ogunyankinnu received the Most Outstanding Cassava Farmer of the Year Award during the OSSIAFFA 2024 Agricultural Trade Fair in Akure, an honor presented by the Ondo State Agricultural Commodity Association (OSACA).

Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Ogunyankinnu credited his humble beginnings as the inspiration behind his vision. “Growing up poor taught me the importance of food security. It’s my mission to ensure no Nigerian goes to bed hungry,” he said.

Despite his achievements, Mr. Ogunyankinnu acknowledged the pressing need for government support to scale up agricultural initiatives. He proposed the establishment of a cluster farming association for cassava farmers in Ondo State, urging federal and state governments to provide grants, modern equipment, and subsidized farming chemicals.

These measures, he argued, would boost productivity and reduce costs, ensuring food security for more Nigerians.

Mr. Ogunyankinnu’s efforts serve as a reminder of the transformative potential of agriculture in addressing Nigeria’s food crisis.
