Thomas Olaleye Ogungbangbe: An Innovator with a difference

An interesting fact about the uniqueness of life is its ability to propel individuals to greatness, recognising that life is not all about the fame or the attention that a name draws, but the impact of a personality that stands the test of time, empowers humanity as well as drive development.

Driving the Oil and Gas Passion

Exuding competence in leadership, innovation, governance, Thomas Olaleye Ogungbangbe(PhD) stands as one of the novel innovators in Nigeria’s Downstream Oil and Gas Sector, particularly the Aviation Fuel Industry, bridging the gap between policy, action and growth.

Inspired by the desire to contribute to Nigeria’s socio-economic growth through his impact in the Aviation Fuel Industry, the Osun-born magnate is living his dream as a major player in the Oil and Gas sector, the mainstay of the economy, powering innovations that has led to the advancement of the Aviation Fuel Industry and growing it from six (6) companies to close to fourty (40) companies today.

Education and Impact

Coming from a family that values education, hard work, character and competence, stints at the University of Ilorin, Babcock University, Oxford Princeton University, Harvard Business School, Said Business School, Imperial College of Technology- London and Herriot Wyatt University,Edinburg, U.K., developed his cerebral strength and passion in Energy and impactful leadership.

While luck and fortune may have smiled on Olaleye to have worked with some of the biggest oil firms in the land including Chevron Oil Plc vis MRS, National Oil vis Conoil and the likes, his acumen, brilliance and ingenuity helped him to bring to table, ideas that facilitated strategies to develop policy, lead teams, as well as hold executive positions in large scale Oil and Gas companies, steering the wheel of business growth and strategy, while advocating sustainable practices.

Philanthropy and Politics

A philanthropist per excellence, Ogungbangbe has contributed in no mean measure to Education and Healthcare initiatives, particularly in rural areas. Some of these include but are not limited to being a front-line advocate in the mass worming programs for children under the HELP (Helminthiasis Elimination Lower Cost Partnership) by Pfizer implemented in many states of Nigeria, giving a $100,000 Research Grant to the University of Ilorin for a study of microbial contamination in Aviation Fuel as well as providing 5 Babcock University students who are indigenes of Osun State with Ph.D. scholarship grants, to mention but a few.

In the field of politics, he aspires to run for Osun East Senatorial seat, leveraging his vast experience in Oil and Gas and Aviation to effect change and to stand as a change agent. To build his political profile, he has shown commitment and involvement to the human capital development using his organization, CITA Energies. Some of his social responsibility and community engagement initiatives range from sponsoring the construction of the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport Road Network which cost the sum of Three Hundred Million Naira (N300,000,000.00) in 2022, donating 20,000 vials of pain relief injections to Osun State Government (2016) and 2000 units of Food palliatives across all L.G.As in Osun State via NULGE (2018).

Also notable among his strides in community development include clearing the tax debts of all 145 APC candidates from Osun East (2024), donating refuelling kits to the Nigerian Airforce (2017), donating Electric Transformers to Lagos and Abuja Airports, donating cash gifts to Port Harcourt and Warri member communities to mention just a few. According to him, “these are done purely on the desire to create positive change, share personal values, recognise the industry’s social impact, inspire others and largely from a place of gratitude and humility.”

Recognitions and Aspirations for Growth

Due to his work with CITA Energies, Thomas has received several accolades among which are the ‘Leadership Excellence Award for Oil & Gas Personality Leader of the Year’ (2009) given byBusinessDay, ‘Icon of Societal Development of the Year’ issued by the West Africa Student Union Parliament and the ‘Thomas Sankara Pan African Prize for Excellence as Patriotic Icon of the Year’ (2024), highlighting his dedication and contributions to the development of the nations of Africa.

Having the largest spread of infrastructure in the Aviation Fuel business in Nigeria, all over sixteen (16) states across the six (6) geo-political zones of Nigeria which makes the organisation to be distantly admired by other companies, the Chairman, CITA Energies and, Chairman of the Aviation Fuel Marketers Association of Nigeria believes that regulation and a revolution in production is needed so that the nation will be less dependent on importation and rather impute sources to help Nigeria export more for the Economy to thrive.

Olaleye thinks the future of Aviation Fuel lies in sustainable alternatives like Biofuels and Electronic propulsion, with sustainable alternatives playing a significant role in reducing carbon emissions as panaceas to solving challenges of infrastructure constraints, policy inconsistencies, and pluralisation.

He is also a promoter of continuous stakeholders’ engagement, policy reforms, promotion ofindustry collaboration, inclusive regional economic growth as well as environmental sustainability which would be evident if the industry players engage in responsible practices and investment in renewable Energy sources.
