The Nigerian government has struck a deal with leading sugar refineries in a major move to combat skyrocketing sugar prices and ensure affordability during Ramadan.

Industry, Trade and Investment Minister, Dr. Doris Uzoka Anite, personally toured the facilities of Dangote, BUA, Flour Mills, Bestaf, and Golden Sugar, witnessing firsthand their commitment to quality and innovation.

“Today, I saw a spark of hope for a thriving sugar industry,” declared Anite, reassuring Nigerians that there will be no price hikes during Ramadan. “We stand firm in ensuring stable sugar prices, crucial for every household.”

The Minister pledged full government support, including potential partnerships with the National Sugar Development Council and Industrial Training Fund to create jobs and enhance skills.

Collaboration with the Science Ministry is also on the table, aiming to cut back on imports and boost international standards with cutting-edge equipment.

“The sugar refineries’ commitment to this plan shows their alignment with our food security goals,” Anite emphasised.

“I commend their dedication, but our collective vision demands even higher standards.”

While acknowledging the industry’s efforts in meeting national demand, Anite addressed concerns about Golden Sugar’s performance under the National Sugar Master Plan, stressing that subpar results won’t be tolerated.

“This partnership between government and private sector is a sweet recipe for progress,” the Minister declared.

“The sugar refineries’ pledge, backed by the Federal Government’s resolve, is a giant leap towards national development.”
