Doctors at a private hospital in Lekki area of Lagos are battling to save the life of 45-year-old businessman, Godwin Obike who was allegedly stabbed in different parts of the body by his sister in-law at their Lekki Garden Phase 4 residence in Lagos.
Consequently, his sister in-law, a make-up artist and graduate of the River State University of Science and Technology, Chioma Iwu and the victim’s wife, Mrs Stella Obike , have been arrested by detectives at State criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID , Yaba over alleged attempted murder.
However, during interrogation, the victim’s wife exonerated herself from culpability in the attack. Rather, she lamented that she had been going through torture in the hands of her husband.
She stated further that the beating got to its height last Saturday, after her husband barged into their daughter’s bedroom where she had been sleeping, following a misunderstanding between them and descended on her. Not done, she alleged that he used an electrocuting gadget on her until she passed out.
Explaining, the Mbitolu , Imo state born said “We have been having minor quarrels over finance management on his part. He abused me physically and emotionally. Even when I lost one of our children, he made mockery of the whole situation.
“The incident that led to this present situation, occurred after I returned from the United States of America, to find out he beat up my mother, who tried to stop him from further beating one of my daughters, who was bleeding from the injury sustained.
“When I confronted him, he said he regretted marrying somebody from a poor family. Not even persuasions from his family members could compel him to apologise to my mother. After my mum’s exist, I told him that he must got to the village to reconcile with her before we would be in good terms. That was how I started sleeping in one of the rooms, where he sneaked in that morning and started beating me at the same time placed at electrocuting gadget on me until I passed out.”
On her part, her sister, Chioma, stated that she was jolted from sleep following a shout of help from her niece.
She admitted to have stabbed her in-law but insisted she did in defence and also to prevent same fate from befalling her.
According to the 34-year-old, “on this particular day, I woke up at 5a.m. due to the noise upstairs , followed by a plea of “daddy please don’t kill my mummy” from my nice.
“I rushed upstairs and saw my sister’s husband, using an electrocuting device on my sister, who was on the floor.
“When I tried to stop him, he pushed me away and also used the device on me, causing me to fall. He kept kicking my sister, who was motionless, and said he would kill both of us.
“In defence, I picked an empty wine bottle in the room and smashed it on him.”
