THE Village Head of Ikot-Obot in Cross River State, Chief Eyo Bassey, was reportedly killed by a group of persons suspected to be hired assassins in Bakassi Local Government Area of the state, weekend.

The 52-year-old deceased was, until his death, a staff of Audit Department, Ministry of Finance in the state.

An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said his assailants, numbering more than two, went to his residence at Ikot-Obot, opposite Ikot-Effiom Primary School, to kill.

The eyewitness said: “When two of them entered his house, it was obvious that they meant business because one of them was wearing a mask, while the other was unmasked.

“When they started shooting him, the bullet did not penetrate. They then used machete to hack him to death. It happened at 1p.m.”

When contacted, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident, saying “we are aware of the murder of Chief Eyo Bassey and we are also aware that some suspects have been named.”
