A trader, Obinna Ogbonnaya, 39, was on Thursday arraigned at the Karimo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja for allegedly driving dangerously and causing accident.
He was also driving without a valid driver’s licence. Ogbonnaya, a trader at the Karimo Market, however, denied the charges.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Florence Auhioboh, told court that one Chima Ezeala of Karimo, reported the matter at the Karimo Police Station on Feb. 8.
Auhioboh said that Ezeala alleged that on Feb. 2, the defendant drove an Acura four-wheel drive dangerously along Karimo Road by the market junction and in the process knocked down the complainant.
The prosecutor said that the complainant sustained a fracture on his left leg and incurred a bill of N50, 000 on treatment.
Auhioboh said that when the defendant was arrested and investigation was carried out by the police, it was discovered that Ogbonna was driving without a driver’s license but a learner’s permit.
The prosecutor said, however, that there was no learner sign on the car to indicate that Ogbonnaya was a learner. He said there was also no learning instructor beside Ogbonna at the time of the accident.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 18 and 7 of the Road Traffic Act. Counsel to the defendant, Charity Nwosu, applied for his bail and assured the court that he would not jump bail.
The Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000 and one surety in like sum Sadiq said that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
He also ordered that Ogbonna’s vehicle should be kept at the police station till the end of the case. The judge adjourned the case till March 9 for further hearing
