ABA—Workers of the Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics, SSANIP, and Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, Abia State Polytechnic chapter, have begun an indefinite strike over non-payment of seven months arrears of salaries.
Sources at the institution told Vanguard that the workers took the step after they could not reach agreement with the management of the polytechnic in a meeting held last Friday.
In a telephone interview with Vanguard, Chairman of ASUP, Abia Poly chapter, Mr. Precious Nwakodo, who confirmed the strike, said: “All the three staff unions started strike on Monday since we have waited for about three weeks and nothing has been done to address the workers’ plight.”
The ASUP chairman insisted that the strike would continue until the government showed serious commitment towards paying the arrears of salaries owed workers.
But in a swift reaction, Chairman, Governing Council of the polytechnic, Dr. Chuku Wachuku, said the council was making efforts to pay.
