ENUGU—Pandemonium broke out, yesterday, in Enugu metropolis following a gun battle between nine suspected robbers, who raided New Market, Edinburgh and Independence Layout axis, snatching about three cars.
The operation, which lasted about two hours, saw some motorists plying the affected routes making frantic efforts to make a detour.
In the process many crashed their vehicles, while others abandoned their cars and scampered for safety.
According to an eye witness, the gunmen came in two vehicles: a Toyota Sienna and Camry 2002 model. Before then, they were reported to have collected another Camry Spider model from the owner at gunpoint before proceeding to riddle the body of their victim with bullets.
The eyewitness said: “They just came and were seen raising two fingers in the air, while proceeding to attack their victim.
“I have never seen that kind of confidence on the part of armed men. It was a scary experience for me.”
Another eyewitness, who gave his name simply as Mark, said: “They shot him the first time and he fell inside a nearby gutter. They then proceeded to where he was and continued to shoot at different parts of his body to make sure that he was dead.
“Thereafter, they started shooting sporadically in the air to disperse the crowd.”
