Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria weekend won the 2016 Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Games, beating their hottest rivals the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation to the second place.

However, Team NNPC redeemed its image with a 3-0 whitewash of Shell in the final match of the football event played at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere on Saturday. It was another gold for NNPC in soccer, second year running. Earlier, Team NLNG had recorded a 6-5 victory over Team Total to win the third place match after a nail-biting penalty shoot out.

After  one week of pulsating competition, Team Shell garnered a total of 14 gold, 14 silver and 9 bronze medals to cart home the overall winner’s trophy of NOGIG 2016.

Coming a close second was NNPC whose massive medal haul resulted in 13 gold, 15 silver and 18 bronze medals.

Chevron placed a distant 3rd in the log with 5 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze, while ExxonMobil with 5 gold, 2 silver and 7 bronze placed 4th.

In the 5th position was Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas with 4 gold, 4 silver and 8 bronze medals, while Department of Petroleum Resources with 3 gold and 2 bronze medals placed 6th. Total with 1 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze was 7th.

Petroleum Training Institute with 1 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze were 8 while Nigerian Content Development Monitoring Board took the rear with 2 silver and 3 bronze medals.

In the finals of the women’s 100 metres dash, Edidong Umoh of NNPC bagged the gold in a time of 13.9 seconds. Eji Effiong of Total won the silver in a time of 14.2 seconds while Chidima Ugbor of NNPC won bronze.

In the men’s category, Prince Wopara of Shell beat a strong field to emerge the fastest man in the Oil and Gas sector with a time of 11.3secs. Wale Lawal and Ayo Mibiola of NNPC and Total respectively, placed second and third.

Shell won the women’s 4×100 mtrs relay race while NNPC won the men’s race. It was indeed a spectacle as the mammoth crowd at the stadium was thrilled by the performances of the oil athletes.

The Lagos State Governor, Akimbode Ambode was represented by the Chairman of the State Sports Commission, Deji Tinubu while the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports Christian Ohaa represented the Minister, Solomon Dalung.

In his closing remarks, Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Ambrose Imokhai observed that the 2016 Games were the best organised in recent times, adding that “every participating company was a winner because no company is leaving here empty handed.”
