The race to get the top prizes at stake at the ongoing 2016 NPA Lagos International Polo Tournament intensified yesterday as the men are now being separated from boys with Lagos Zippy among the teams that qualified for the knockout stage of the Open Cup.
Zippy added Lagos MUK to their list of casualties with a 7 1/2 – 2 scoreline while Ibadan Eleyele beat Kano Seamans 5 – 2 1/2 to also stay on course for the title.
However, it was a forgettable outing for Lagos Goodfellow/Shoreline who lost their second game to crash out of the tournament.
Shoreline came into the tournament with lots of confidence having won the low cup in the first stage of the MTN and GTBank-sponsored tournament but could not salvage their pride against the Aerovote after their shock loss to. Samsung Rifugio in their first game.
Zippy went into the clash against MUK knowing that a win will be enough and they scored the first goal through Bode Makanjoula to lead 1 1/2 – 0 but Akin Inuwa responded for MUK.
Leroux Hendrik’s then went on rampage scoring three successive goals to establish a commanding 4 1/2 – 1 lead at the end of the second chukka
Bode scored another goal finishing off a pass from his brother Rotimi in the third chukka and that drew a response from Jamilu Umar. The last chukka could only produce a solitary goal which was scored by Hendriks to give Zippy a vital win.
Eleyele also began their Low Cup on a good note by defeating Kano Seamans in the third match of the day.
