The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has inaugurated a five-man panel to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the clash between the Nigerian Army and members of the Shiite Islamic sect in Zaria.
Toshiba to cut 7,000 jobs in PC, TV units over accounting scandal
Japan’s Toshiba Corp said on Monday it would cut nearly 7,000 consumer electronics jobs after a 1.3 billion dollars accounting scandal. Toshiba also said it would sell its television manufacturing plant in Indonesia and that eventual job cuts could be over 10,000, including previously announced cuts and those seeking voluntary early retirement.
Man in prison for allegedly killing co-tenant over N5,000 electricity bill
A man, Chukwuebuka Okeke, who allegedly beat a co-tenant to death over N5,000 electricity bill, was on Monday remanded in Lagos prisons. An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, said the accused should be remanded at Ikoyi Prisons pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo of an Ikeja High Court on Monday sentenced a court registrar, Mrs Oluronke Rosolu, to 10 years imprisonment for defrauding a former Chief of Army Staff, retired Lt.-Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi of 330,000 dollars. Rosolu was convicted on all the two counts charge of conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretences brought against her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Man, 32, in court for raping 18-year-old girl
James Adamu, a 32-year-old man, who allegedly raped an 18-year-old woman in Ota, Ogun, on Monday appeared before an Ota Magistrates’ Court. The suspected rapist has, however, been admitted to a bail of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum. Adamu, who resides at No. 10, Bello Close, Olokomeji Ijoko in Ota, is facing a charge of rape.
