Former Minister of Interior, Captain Emmanuel Iheanacho, says the country may not get out of it’s nagging unemployment problem if Nigerians do not drop their love and preference for foreign goods and services.
Captain Iheanacho, who stated this at a press conference in Owerri, however reasoned that only effective industrialization, through domestic manufacturing of goods, would reduce importation and unemployment.
“The elimination of our unbridled preference for the importation of all manner of foreign products is the only sure way to create jobs for the teeming young school leavers roaming the streets in search of jobs”, Iheanacho said.
The former Minister also reasoned that effective industrialization, through domestic manufacturing of goods, would ultimately reduce the importation of all manner of goods into Nigeria.
He regretted that all the industries established by the late Chief Sam Mbakwe administration during the second republic were abandoned to rot away by successive administrations.
Answering a question, Iheanacho linked the biting youth unemployment to lack of coordination and proper counseling of youths in respect of courses they should pursue in institutions of higher learning.
Iheanacho, who is a gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, assured that he would not only bring the moribund industries back to life but would also create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive for the state to really become an industrialized society.
The APGA chieftain also spoke of his vision to ensure a revolution in the agricultural, transport, health and educational sector if elected.
“I make bold to observe that developing a vibrant transport system is very important to our state instead of the current Keke NAPEP business and a ring road that would help to decongest the growing traffic situation in our urban centre is also part of my vision”, Iheanacho said.
Drawing inspiration from his overseas industrial experience, the politician promised that he would utilize his foreign connections to quicken the industrialization of the state if offered the privilege to pilot the affairs of the state.
