Ile-Ife – The West Africa University Games (WAUG) on Friday said that the Republic of Benin has bid to host the 2015 edition of the Games.
WAUG President, Prof Kingsley Akpabio, in Ile-Ife, Osun, said that WAUG had already sent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to the country.
Akpabio added that WAUG and Republic of Benin authorities had already been working toward the country wining the hosting right.
According to him, there will be an executive meeting of the two authorities in March to synchronise arrangement for a successful hosting of the Games.
The WAUG President added that WAUG would also hold a conference in the second quarter of the year between July and August.
He said that the conference was to fine-tune hosting arrangement for the Games and to deliberate other challenges confronting WAUG.
Akpabio added that he would prefer the conference to be held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) because most flights in the west coast were centralised in Lagos.
The president said that WAUG had released the time-table for championships that would be held this year.
He said that University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) will host football, while WAUG was currently negotiating with Burkina Faso to host basketball.
Akpabio added that track and field and tennis events to be hosted by the University of Calabar (UNICAL) might be shifted till next year.
“This is because the 19th National Sports Festival will hold later in the year in Calabar, Cross River.
“The state may find the hosting of the WAUG event a burden and may shift it till 2015,’’ he said.
Akpabio then, urged universities to send in the list of their athlete-students to WAUG in time for the competitions.
He said that WAUG had introduced on online registration to avoid impersonation. (NAN)
