TALES OF TWO MODEL COLLEGES

The idea behind the establishment of model colleges by the Lagos State government, was to provide a comprehensive residential education programme for students.

Both schools in focus are under the Badagry Education district. One of six educational districts in the state. The schools are Iworo-Ajido Model College and Kankon Model College.

IWORO-AJIDO Model College

Establishment
College, Iworo-Ajido, the oldest of the model colleges, was established on October 3,1977.

It replaced the then Local Authority Secondary Modern School founded in January 1955 which was abolished by the government.

Since inception, seven Principals had served as the Accounting Officers of the school.

Over the years, the paths of the two model colleges have, of course, significantly differed.

Infrastructure

The state of infrastructure in the 36-year-old college is very poor. The school has no special hall for xaminations.

A good number of available classrooms are begging for attention with dilapidated windows and walls.

The roofs have leakages and the ceilings worn and replaced with palm fronds. Some of the students explained that whenever it rained, classes are suspended.

Also, the floors of the   classrooms need repairs.

Vanguard  learnt that the floors were last rehabilitated three years ago by the students in Senior Secondary School, SS3 then, who contributed money for the repairs.

Teachers

Teachers are in  short
supply at Iworo-Ajido Model College.

One of the teachers who craved anonymity said; “Several teachers have been deployed to the school before but after the expiration of a term or two, they seek for transfer to another district or school.

“Complaints by the teachers, which are obvious, include lack of conducive teaching environment and facilities that will enhance their work,” he said.

Infrastructure

Kankon Model
College, has good infrastructure at its disposal. Sources said that the school has since existence enjoyed the state government’s patronage. It gives much attention to the school that whenever it tenders  proposal for  infrastructure provision, the request is quickly granted.

There is an ongoing construction work in the school.

The blocks of classrooms are decent and painted to meet international standards.

In each of the classrooms, are befitting furniture. Modern boards, white boards to aid students  learning, and shelves to store learning materials, are also available for the students.

Teachers

Kankon Model
College has teachers who attend to the needs of their students. And this has aided the high  students enrolment in the school.
