Super Eagles defensive midfielder, Ugonna Uzochukwu has said Christmas celebration was the least worry for his teammates.
The domestic Eagles expectedly marked the Christmas celebration in the Abuja camp in furtherance of preparations for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa next month.
Uzochukwu said what was uppermost on their minds during the holiday was to prepare adequately to excel in their debut at the Chan football event.
“Christmas celebration is completely off our minds. Of course, we’ve already missed the festivity as we’re still in camp preparing for the African Nations Championship.
“Our minds are focused on our trainings and to ensure we contest for the title in South Africa.
“We’re ready to sacrifice for fatherland as the African Nations Championship is being viewed by my teammates as a call to duty.
“We’re not training tomorrow (Wednesday) being Christmas day so we’ll use the free day to rest our heads and plan ahead for the remaining practice matches coming up on Saturday and Monday.
“The competition for shirt is intensifying as nobody wants to be left out from the final list of players to head to South Africa.
“The competition for shirt is healthy and I strongly believe whoever that gets the nod to wear the green and white national colours will excel at the Chan.
“I’m confident that we won’t add to the numbers in South Africa but strongly contest for the title,” said the Enugu Rangers playmaker to supersport.com.
The Eagles will engage the domestic champions, Kano Pillars in a practice match on Monday at the Abuja National Stadium before they head off to South Africa.
The third edition of the Chan holds in South Africa from January 11 to February 1. Nigeria will compete in Group A with the hosts, South Africa, Mali and Mozambique.
