Lagos residents remain divided over the propriety of crowning of Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, the daughter of former governor Bola Tinubu, as the Iyaloja General of Lagos.
The investiture, which coincided with the 70th birthday ceremony, Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty, Rilwan Akiolu, was performed at the Iga Iduganran Palace on Lagos Island.
Her appointment in July, was said to have been witnessed and endorsed by market leaders of all the 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs, in Lagos State.
Before her appointment, Folashade was the Deputy President General of the Market Men and Women.
It will be recalled that controversies trailed her appointment last July, as her father, was accused of imposing her, following the death of his mother, Abibatu Mogaji, the late Iyaloja, who died last June.
All major markets throughout the Lagos metropolis, including Ayobo_Ipaja, Iyana_Ipaja, Abule_Egba, Dopemu, Ogba, Egbeda, Agege, Balogun, Oke Arin, Oyingbo, Oshodi, Mushin and Ikotun were all shut on the day of her installation.
Being the commercial hub centre of Nigeria, millions, perhaps billions of naira would be lost in trade transactions as a result of this closure.
When Vanguard spoke to residents, the were divided over whether Falashaded-Ojo should have been chosen.
According to Chidiebere Nzube, a merchant in Oshodi said; “So all these poor market women are contributing money for the Tinubu’s family. This is wrong.
“I am amazed that the whole markets were shut for a mere installation. So the Yorubas can’t tell the Tinubus to go to do the right things. Why do they depend on them so much for everything?”
Hassan Zubairu reacting said; “Robbing our collective wealth to feed their generations yet unborn! Is there a God who sees all these?
“I couldn’t sell my cows on that day. I came to Lagos 15 years ago and I have never seen anything like this.
For Abidemi Oyeyemi, an electronic trader at Balogun, Lagos Island: “It is Tinubu that is running all things in Lagos now, all documents are signed in his house in Ikoyi. I understand that the Iyaloja is a major title and the marketers should honour it. But this state has more people than several countries of the world.”
Durojaiye Akinpelu, while supporting the choice said; “My grandma was the Iyalode of my small village and now my mum is the Iyalode, So I don’t see anything wrong in giving the post to Mama Mogaji’s grand daughter.
“Moreso, that its the Tinubus that hyped the post. So anybody that does not know anything about some people’s tradition should just shut up.
Julius Uzezi, said; “The family history suggests that they have been instrumental in the rise of Lagos, right from the days of Saka Tinubu who used to rent out buildings to Lagos state to be used as prisons. They are land owners and have historically always been involved in the development of the state.
Makinde Ajiboye said; “For those of you that do not know, the Title Iyaloja is a position among the hierarchy of chiefs in any Yoruba town or village and the appointment is usually by birth. However there are honorary Iyalojas.”
