Lagos recruits graduate teachers

By Amaka Abayomi

Determined to improve on the quality of education, the Lagos State Government has recruited single subject graduates without teaching qualifications to teach in its public secondary schools.

According to the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, this step was taken to reduce the number of unemployed graduates and also reposition education in the state.

“The state government decided to give single subject graduates this opportunity and it is hoped that they will become better teachers after their training.”

Charging them to be committed and productive so as to prove that the state government has done the right thing, Oladunjoye said that government is spending so much on the provision of laboratories to improve teaching and learning of science subjects in state public schools.

Pointing out that the idea of recruiting graduates without education background will be sustained, the Permanent Secretary, Education, Mrs. Omolara Erogbogbo said government is planning to widen the scope of teaching service in the state.

She called on private organisations, philanthropists and others to partner with the state government to develop the education sector.
