Director-General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, Mr Paul Orhii, has commended Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State, for setting up and sustaining the state’s Integrated Medical Industries Limited, that manufactures syringes and other medical devices.
Orhii spoke after a facility tour of the syringe and other medical devices manufacturing plant in Rumuosi, East-West Road, Port Harcourt.
The plant owned by Rivers State Government was recently pre-qualified by World Health Organization, WHO, to manufacture syringes and other medical devices that could be used anywhere in the world.
Orhi said: “I congratulate the governor and people of Rivers State and ofcourse, the entire people of Nigeria. With this prequalification, these products can be sold all over the world. I remember that they have already started. I think during the Haiti earthquake some of the products from Rivers State here were sent to that country and they were accepted. So, I think this is a very big one for us.
“I am very happy. I just got this message and I had to come here to celebrate because this is a very big one for us.“
He said the Rivers State-owned syringe and other medical devices manufacturing plant was prequalified by WHO to manufacture such products because of its technical competence, excellence and maintenance culture.
Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr Sampson Parker, who represented Governor Amaechi, thanked the NAFDAC boss for the visit. He also said the achievement was made possible by the governor.
