The NBA Technical Committee on Conference Planning was set up by the National Executive Committee of NBA to lead in an advisory capacity to the NBA Secretariat on matters relating to the planning and execution of the programmes of the NBA for the conference and also formulate the guiding principles and policies that would ensure a paradigm shift and deliver an intellectually rewarding and value assured conference for conferees.
The NBA NEC in its wisdom appointed the NBA President, Joseph Daudu, SAN as Chair of the NBA TCCP.
The NBA TCCP, conscious of its mandate, has recently unfolded a bumper package carefully selected for the delight and interest captivation of registered conferees for the duration of the conference.
On August 21, the conference slated for Port Harcourt, Rivers State, will commence with a pre-conference NBA NEC meeting by 2pm, followed by a welcome cocktail by the LOC by 7pm and thereafter a Bar leaders dinner by 8pm.
The theme of this year’s conference is “Sustaining an Enduring Democracy” and the keynote speaker is Prof. Wole Soyinka, while the Chief Justice of Nigeria is expected to chair the event. President Goodluck Jonathan, is the special guest of honour and dignitaries are being expected to grace the opening ceremony.
The Showcase session of the Conference will follow with the topic: Towards a good Nigeria; the Quest for Good Governance and the Rule of Law. This session will feature Governors Adams Oshiomole, Rotimi Amaechi, Sule Lamido, Shehu Shema, and Babatunde Fashola, SAN. The Chair of the session will be Mr. Donald Duke.
Traditionally, the academic content of the NBA conference would be run by the sections and fora of the Bar. The NBA section on Bussiness Law would present topics and speakers on Facilitating investments and Regulation in the Nigerian Electricity supply; the role of Lawyers; The new Tax regime; Integrity of Tax Collection and the relevance of Tax Appeal Tribunal; Non-Interest banking in Nigeria – Is it legal, valid and sustainable? And Impact of Corporate Governance on business management procedures.
The NBA section on Legal Practice will present topics, speakers and discussants on Prosecution of Electoral offenders; a sine qua non to strengthening our democracy; Stemming Electoral violence in Nigeria – A focus on adequacy of Laws and its enforcement; Speedy Administration of Justice; which way forward?, and Locus Standi and Public Interest Litigation.
The NBA Section on Public Interest and Development Law, SPIDEL, will present topics and speakers on National Unity and the Citizenship question in Nigeria; the way to go and Public Interest Litigation in an Emerging Democracy, among others.
The Judges Forum, the British Nigerian Law Forum, the Women’s Forum, the Human Rights Institute, Young Lawyer’s forum, Lawyers in the Media, Corporate Counsel forum, ADR forum all lined up specialization and multi-interest topics to engage conferees for the duration of the conference.
The NBA TCCP has also lined up a number of social and sporting activities to keep the conferees busy throughout the conference. Such programmes include Golf tournament, Football tournament, excursions and tours, cocktails, fora and sections dinner, Young Lawyers reception party, cocktails, gala nights, among.
The Annual General meeting of the NBA will hold on August 25, followed by a press conference the next day
