LAGOS—Three armed men yesterday morning invaded the Anthony village home of the Publisher of Vanguard Newspapers, Mr. Sam Amuka and carted away some cash and valuables worth millions of naira.
The hoodlums also made away with the Publisher’s ash-coloured Honda Accord car with registration number CF 411 FST after holding the entire family hostage for about thirty minutes.
Vanguard gathered that the three armed men, with one wearing a mask, accosted the Publisher while his wife was driving him into their house at about 7am and forced them into the expansive compound.
They reportedly followed him inside, held the guard hostage with their leader pointing a small pistol at both the publisher and his wife, including two of his nephews, after which they ordered them to go to his room upstairs, demanding N100,000,000 0(One hundred million Naira cash).
It was learnt that the publisher opened his drawer and gave them all the money he had in the house. They then locked them in the room, after collecting all the phones in the household and drove away with his Honda Accord car.
Vanguard also learnt that while they were taking the Publisher and his nephews upstairs, one of the robbers positioned himself at the main gate after which they had locked the guard inside one of the rooms at the boys quarters .
A Vanguard security man who was resuming duty while they were operating inside said when he approached the main gate called on the Hausa guard to open the gate but a strange voice told him that he should go away because they were busy trying to take the owner of the house to hospital because he was sick.
The shocked Vanguard security man reportedly insisted on the gate being opened and even thrust his identity card through a little opening at the gate in order to identify himself properly to the stranger. It was then that the robber at the gate opened the gate slightly and pushed him inside the compound.
The security man said as soon as he came inside, the strange man started calling his colleagues by shouting “Oga, Oga, make una come oo”. At this stage, two of the robbers who went upstairs reportedly came out clutching a polythene bag and on seeing the security man, they ordered that he should be shot.
Fortunately, they ended up taking his mobile telephone and even dropped his Sim card for him before disappearing with the Honda Accord car.
The matter was later reported at Anthony Village Police Station after which both the Divisional Police Officer in the area, Mr. Raji and his men swiftly visited the scene. Later in the day, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of Operations at the Command headquarters, Ikeja, Mr. Tunde Sobulo also visited the scene to see things for himself.
Meanwhile, Police sources said both detectives at the Anthony village station and a crack team of men from the Special Anti Robbery Squad, (SARS) at the Command headquarters, have swung into action with a view to arresting the fleeing armed robbers and recovering the stolen Honda Accord car.
