By Chioma Uzochukwu and Chioma Okpala

Onitsha—ONITSHA, the commercial city of Anambra State, was yesterday thrown into confusion as armed men suspected to be kidnappers abducted the chairman of Onitsha Electronics International Market, Chief Okechukwu Okolie,
who is more known by his business name, Gozac.

Vanguard gathered that Chief Okolie was abducted at about 3pm yesterday by five armed men who dressed in chieftaincy regalia at Upper Iweka part of Oguta road. The gunmen were said to have driven in a Sports Utility Vehicle, SUV, accosted him, shot at his Toyota Camry, before they blocked him and subsequently forced him out of his car.

The gunmen were said to have dumped him inside their vehicle and escaped through the 3-3 part of Onitsha, manned by some police and military men.

Contacted, Anambra State Command Police Public Relation Officer, PPRO, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka, said the matter had not been reported to the police command officially.

However, Chief Okolie’s car had been taken to the Police Area Command, Onitsha, while many are querying how the kidnappers escaped the eagle-eyes of soldiers manning 3-3 road.

Although family members and his colleagues at the market were yet to have contact with the kidnappers at the time of this report, Vanguard, however, gathered that the kidnapping may be connected with the implementation of Government White Paper on the market, which will disposess the former leaders and some traders loyal to them of a lot of stalls as well as compel them to repay several millions of money.

Some of the past leaders were alleged to have allocated as many as 40 stalls per person to themselves and their family members, apart from allegedly misapplying huge amount of money.
