Yenagoa —Embattled Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr Peremobowei Ebebi, yesterday dismissed claims that he was considering resigning, saying he had not been served any impeachment notice.
There had been widespread speculations that some influential Bayelsans had prevailed on Ebebi to resign rather than face the impeachment.
This is coming as the Action Congress, AC, in the state yesterday, described the impeachment move against the Deputy Governor by the lawmakers as nothing but selective justice.
The Deputy Governor in a telephone chat from an undisclosed location, said he was not afraid because he had not committed any crime.
Ebebi said he had not been served the impeachment notice issued by the state House of Assembly, in which 10 counts allegation were levelled against him.
“As long as I am here, I have not resigned. If I want to resign, I will call a press conference and inform you. I cannot just resign like that. I have not been served any notice of impeachment and I don’t intend to resign. I will return home next week,†he said.
Meanwhile AC, insisted that if the House must save itself from what is left of its battered image, the warring Governor and his deputy as well as the Speaker of the House must go.
According to AC’s acting chairman in the state, Ebikibina Miriki, “the impeachment notice issued by the assemblymen against Mr Ebebi is nothing but political vendetta.â€
“There are alleged impeachable offences against the Governor and the Speaker. Impeaching the Deputy Governor without also impeaching the Governor for alleged financial recklessness and indiscipline will be selective. The state needs complete and total cleansing of the financial rot in the state,†he added.
However, the House Committee Chairman on Information, Mr. Kombowei Benson said the decision to serve the impeachment notice on Ebebi has no political under tone, adding, “it is wrong for the people to read political meanings into the present happenings in the state.â€
Benson added that due process will be followed in pursuant to section 180(2) of the 1999 constitution in the impeachment proceeding.
