Abacha makes case for privatisation

 By Bala Ajiya

DAMATURU — Privatisation of government-owned industries would encourage regular payment of revenue to government and consequently increase the internally generated revenue of Yobe State, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Revenue Enhancement in the state, Alhaji Mohammed Abacha, has said.

Abacha who spoke with Vanguard in his office in Damaturu said the government owned industries in the state had not been forthcoming and as such this has led to poor revenue base of the state.

“It is only Yobe State Investment Company that declared a dividend of one million naira in the 1990s and since then, no dividend has been offered by any government company till date. But we believe that if such companies are privatised, the owners would be able to run it like any other business organisation and not to deliver social services as they are,” he said.

He said the privatisation of the companies would enhance the revenue generation drive of the state, and  urged the government to look critically into such areas.
Abacha noted that “based on the reformed way of improving the IGR of the state, we expect about N4.4 billion  to be generated.”
