The United States Government, Israeli and the European union Commission have sympathized with the Government and people of Nigeria over the demise of President Umar Musa Yaradua after a protracted illness.
President Barak Obama in his condolence message said, Yarâ€™Adua worked to promote peace and stability in Africa through his support of Nigerian peace keeping efforts and as well remembered for his personal decency and integrity.
Also on behalf of Israeli Government, Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria Moshe Ram described Yarâ€™adua as a great leader who meant well for his country by championing among them the rule of law principle.
The Delegation of the European Union to Nigeria has also conveyed a condolence message through its President Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso, saying, the former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua made a great contribution to the political and democratic life of the nation, and the stability of the region.
A statement from the U.S Embassy conveying President Obamaâ€™s messageÂ reads: â€œWe are saddened by the news of Nigerian President Umaru Yarâ€™Aduaâ€™s passing, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Yarâ€™Adua family and the people of Nigeria as they mourn his loss.
â€œTonight, we remember and honor President Yarâ€™Aduaâ€™s profound personal decency and integrity, his deep commitment to public service, and his passionate belief in the vast potential and bright future of Nigeriaâ€™s 150 million people.
â€œPresident Yarâ€™Adua worked to promote peace and stability in Africa through his support of Nigerian peacekeeping efforts as well as his strong criticism of undemocratic actions in the region.Â He was committed to creating lasting peace and prosperity within Nigeriaâ€™s own borders, and continuing that work will be an important part of honouring his legacyâ€.
It continued, â€œUnder President Yarâ€™Aduaâ€™s leadership, Nigeria and the United States took steps to deepen the strong bilateral relationship between our two nations and that work has continued even in recent months when President Yarâ€™Aduaâ€™s illness forced him to step back from his governing duties.
â€œThe Nigerian people and government should know that in this time of national mourning they have a friend and enduring partner in the United States and that together we will continue to work to address the common challenges we face.â€
The Statement from the Israeli Embassy in Nigeria reads:Â â€œOn behalf of the Embassy of the State of Israel in Nigeria , I sympathize with the Government and people of Nigeria over the demise of President Umar Musa Yaradua after a protracted illness.
â€œI also join the immediate and extended families of the late President to grieve the loss of their breadwinner.
â€œLate Yarâ€™Adua was a great leader who meant well for this country by championing among them the rule of law principle which formed part of his vision for the attainment of the Seven Point Agenda of his administration.
â€œHis demise will not have however any impact on the cordial and warm relations existing between Israel and Nigeria as an equally capable leader, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has been sworn-in as the President and Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.â€œ
It added, â€œI in pray the Almighty God to give his family and entire people of Nigeria the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
â€œConsidering the fact that President Yaradua died because of health reasons, Israel is dedicating the ongoing Free Eye Treatment Project for the sake of the health of the Nigerian people.
â€œEvery surgery carried out under this project will serve as a prayer for the soul of the departed President. May his soul rest in peace. Amenâ€..
In his letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, the President of the European Commission, Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso, said:
“I have learned with sadness that His Excellency Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has passed away. On behalf of the European Commission, â€œI wish to express my sincerest condolences to his family and to the Government and people of Nigeria.
“Former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua made a great contribution to the political and democratic life of the nation, and the stability of the region. He leaves an enduring legacy which stands as an inspiration to his fellow citizens and the wider world.”
