Police kill two robbery suspects

TWO notorious armed robbers who specialized in robbing unsuspecting bank customers using motorbikes popularly known as Okada Tuesday in Apapa, Lagos, met their waterloo after a gun battle with a team of anti-robbery squad.

Police sources said the gunmen, numbering three,  had ambushed an unnamed business man who had gone to make withdrawal in one of the new generation banks on Point Road, Apapa.

According to sources, immediately the man appeared from the bank premises, the bandits trailed him to a convenient point during which they snatched the bag containing the money from him and sped off.

It was said that passers-by including genuine motor cycle operators raised alarm and alerted a team of anti-robbery squad led by the Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Mohammed Ali, which was on routine patrol of the areas and gave the armed gang a hot chase.

They were rounded up at a traffic along Marine Road and a shootout ensued following which two of them were gunned down while the third escaped into the crowed with bullet wounds.

When the dead armed hoodlums were searched, five live cartridges and one double barrel gun cut to size were recovered from them.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba could not be reached for comments but a sources close to his office which confirmed it said the shootout happened at about 3.30pm adding that the dead robbers had been deposited in public mortuary for autopsy.  According to the sources, the two armed robbers had been on the wanted list of the police as one of them confessed to several crimes on the way to the hospital before he gave up the ghost.

“At about 15.30 hrs, a distress was received that some Okada armed robbers had dispossessed somebody who had just left a bank of some amount.  The police responded swiftly and sighted the hoodlums somewhere on Marine road.  And immediately robbers sighted the police, they opened fire while the police responded accordingly gunning  two of them down in the process.

They however gave up the ghost on the way to the hospital.  On scrutiny and based on confession it was discovered that they hoodlums were among those on our wanted list.  One double barrel gun cut to size and five live cartridges were recovered from them,” said the sources.
