Ebonyi gets salt processing plants

Ohaozara—The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, UNIDO, has started installing salt processing equipment in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi.

Mr Chukwuma Elom, State Coordinator of UNIDO projects, told newsmen yesterday in Ohaozara, that the equipment were being installed at Uburu, Okposi and Idembia communities, which has large salt deposits.

According to him, the machines were fabricated locally at the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, and promoted by the Raw Materials Research and Development Council, RMRDC.

“This project is one of the numerous ones undertaken by UNIDO in the state while others are on energy efficiency, gasification, solar lighting, and agro-processing, among others. The project is sponsored by the Japanese Embassy in Nigeria and has the women of the communities, who are directly involved in the salt processing as direct beneficiaries,” he said.

Elom noted that cooperative societies formed by the communities under UNIDO’s guidance, had grown into the enlarged Ebonyi UNIDO Salt Cooperative Union.

“Each community cooperative society is expected to handle the processing of salt in their areas while the union would add value to the final product through packaging and sales,” he said.
