Robbers invade Abakaliki

By Dennis Agbo

ABAKALIKI — UP till Monday midnight in Abaklaiki, Ebonyi state, the Police tried to contain an armed robbery attack around Agwu Street,  inside the capital city. The robbers held residents of the area hostage till morning of yesterday.

The areas condoned-off by both the joint security patrol of the police and military,  includes the Owe Road area of Hope High School, parts of Afikpo Road, and Agwu street and surroundings.

As at midnight when Vanguard went on patrol along Afikpo and the Enugu-Abakaliki highway, there were multiple security men on patrol in the area. One of the mobile policemen told our reporter that he learnt that the robbers escaped through Owe road.

A journalist who was trapped in the crossfire however, told our reporter that one of the armed robbers was apprehended but that he was not so sure, since he did not come out from his ‘prison.’

According to the journalist, “we ran into the robbers, who were masked as we were coming to the street but we were not stopped. We went into the house and locked up the door. I was trapped there,” he complained,

Our correspondent, who went out late night, met stiff security  up to Sper-Indo area. He was turned back but for a mobile policeman who entered his car and drove around the area with him. “We are keeping vigil. Wherever they come out from this night or in the morning, we will catch them. I will tell you more tomorrow,” he promised.
