Delta NBA tasks govt on devt

By Festus Ahon
UGHELLI—THE Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Ughelli Branch, Delta State, has charged the State Government to brace up with the challenges of developing all parts of the state and its citizenry.

This was contained in a press release issued by the branch and signed by S. O.  Asanuvwie and Chief P. O. Wanogho, branch chairman and member, National Executive Committee, made available to newsmen at the weekend.

According to the statement, Delta State is a rich state with abundance of human and natural and resources. “Crude oil and gas, the main stay of Nigeria’s economy, limestone, the main raw material for glass industries etc, are in abundance.

“Is it the abundance of fertile and arable farm lands and enabling fishing environment for conducive agricultural development?

“How many Deltans are aware that Delta State receives the second highest monthly allocations from the Federation Account, only next to Akwa-Ibom State? What reasonable and realistic achievements has the Delta State Government, as presently constituted, to show-case, even if cosmetically only?

“Delta State is a classical example of a failed State that its citizens are daily insulted with unreasonable governmental propaganda, insultive to the psyche of the people by poor information managers in Delta State Government payroll.

“For more than six months, the Uduaghan’s Government in Delta State has consistently and persistently been publishing in the Delta State Government owned Pointer Newspaper, seventeen (17) purported ‘promises made, promises kept’ by the Uduaghan’s government.

“Each time we from the Ughelli Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (N.B.A.) attend the N.E.C Meetings and Annual Conference of the N.B.A., we are always ashamed that Delta State has no government that keeps its spurious promises to its people.

“We are more disturbed because the present Deputy Governor of Delta State, Prof. Amos Utuama (S.A.N.) is not only a professor of law but a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, in Government of Delta State for ten (10) years now, firstly as Attorney – General and Commissioner for Justice and as a Deputy Governor since May, 29, 2007.

“What has the Deputy Governor to show for the upliftment of the legal Profession, his primary constituency, and the people of Delta State in General?

“The six branches of the N.B.A. in Delta State, Warri, Sapele, Agbor, Ogwashi-Uku, Asaba and Ughelli, were pariah in the committee of the Eighty-eight (88) Branches of N.B.A in Nigeria, during the recently concluded Annual General Confernece of N.B.A., hosted by the Lagos State Government.

“How we wish that the Deputy Governor of Delta State could under-study the Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola (S.A.N.) in the act of Governance, with a mission and services to the people.

“Out of the 36 States in Nigeria, it is only Delta State Government that has no resources to provide vehicles for the six Branches of N.B.A in the State. During the meeting of N.E.C. of N.B.A. hosted by the Warri Branch of N.B.A on the 29th day of May, 2008, Prof. Amos Utuama (S.A.N), for and on behalf of Delta State Government, promised to provide vehicles for each of the branches of N.B.A. in Delta State, within Two Weeks from 29/05/08. That promise was a mere propaganda. What a promise made and a promise kept!

“Delta State Government should wake-up from its present slumber and render verifiable services that would improve the lots of Deltans to Deltans. The Deputy Governor as an icon of the Legal Profession must not only profess law but must also advocate law for the development of Delta State and become a pride to the Legal Profession”.
