Edo PDP warns AC against stampeding lawmakers

By Gabriel Enogholase
BENIN—EDO state chapter of the People Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed surprise over  attempts by the Action Congress (AC) in the state to stampede the State House of Assembly into screening the nominees of the governor into the Universal Basic Education (UBE).

The party, therefore, enjoined the House to remain rooted on the foundation of equity and truth at all times.

In a statement by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Felix Utubor, in Benin yesterday, the party said Action Congress (AC) was quite aware that the dissolution of the UBE Board by the state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, late last year, was still a subject of litigation at a Benin High Court.

According to the statement, “the Action Congress is also aware of Rule 28(5) of Edo State House of Assembly which forbids the House from dabbling into matters that are still in court.

“Stampeding Edo State House of Assembly into taking actions which are breaches to the rule of law, amounts to heating the polity of Edo State and an invitation to anarchy” the party warned.

“The supportive role of the AC in this dispensation is regrettable. It amounts to a blind promotion of injustice.

It is a reminiscence of the actions also taken by the AC early this year when Edo State House of Assembly, in its wisdom, declined to approve certain aspects of this year’s budget”.

The party said that the state shall soon begin to witness sponsored placard-carrying demonstrations destabilizing sittings of the House and calling on the legislatures to give cognizance to actions that are in total disregard for the rule of law, equity and justice.
