Nigeria’s Davis Cup team member, Shehu Lawal’s run at the Governor’s Cup Futures II came to an end yesterday when he lost his second round match in quick sets of 1-6, 2-6 to South Africa’s Ruan Roelofse.
Lawal was no match for Roelofse, who who is the fourth seed in the men’s singles. The Nigerian player, who is being sponsored by the Governor of Taraba State, looked every inch a beaten player right from the moment that the South African got the first break of serve in the opening game.
His presence of mind on the court was suspect as Roelofse ran out victorious with less hassles.
Men’s singles top seed, Kamil Capkovic of Slovakia beat Yusuke Watamuki of Japan 6-4,6-1, just as Indian Yuki Bhambri defeated Senegal’s Daouda Ndiaye 6-2,6-4, while Karan Rastogi of India brushed aside South Africa’s Clayton Gibertson in two sets of 6-4,6-1.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Nina Bratchikova, a former winner of the tourney, was unable to finish her game against unranked Donna Vekic of Croatia. The 29-year old player retired in the second set of the match that ended 6-2,4-1.
