Former vice president and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, Atiku Abubakar has again backed calls for the establishment of state police, but said to guarantee that, Nigeria has to critically examine its current structure with a view to practising real fiscal federalism.

A Constitution that will reflect the needs of the Nigerian people is expected to come to fruition about March this year as has been promised by the National Assembly. Before now, the Constitution has been severely criticised as a product of the military. Many attempts had been made in the past by the National Assembly to come up with acceptable Constitution for the country, but due to one controversy or the other, the attempts ended up not yielding results.

As Nigeria reels under crime, criminality and terrorism, a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abayomi Michael Ogunnusi, has called for the establishment of state and community policing structures across the country.

FOR a long time, the debate has raged on whether a central Police force, commanded by federal authorities from the nation’s capital is good for the country. There have been many arguments both for and against whether states of the federation should have their own Police organizations.

Governor Gabriel Suswam has described the agitation for state police in the country as untimely, unreasonable and premature, warning that such a force will be a tool for political oppression, intimidation and harassment of innocent Nigerians.
