Another sad story
I wept when I heard that Tunji Okusanya, the distinguished undertaker, perished in the Associated Airlines crash, alongside his son and four employees, en route to the funeral of Olusegun Agagu, the former Governor of Ondo State. I didn’t know Tunji well. But I will never forget him for two reasons:
Avoidable tragedies
TONYE Harry, the distinguished, smart and immensely likeable former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Tennis Federation, died last week in an air ambulance.
Niger Deltans for Jonathan and Amaechi!
SOME folks are warped. They love trouble, find a way of benefitting from it and encourage antagonists to keep fighting, even when the fight doesn’t make sense.
Some Nigerians are honourable!
NOBODY on this earth is perfect, so I don’t always agree with my Governor, Rotimi Amaechi and I’ve criticised him on this page on a few occasions.
Mismanaging relationships
WATCHING the PDP fall apart is like watching a car crash in slow motion. At the time of writing, 26 senators and 57 House of Representatives members have decided to defect to the “New PDP” splinter group that was formed last weekend and is headed by Alhajis Atiku Abubakar and Abubakar Kawu Baraje.
Playground politics!
GOVERNOR Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State – and his indigenous supporters and opponents – take delight in upsetting each other, regularly engage in vitriolic wars of words and use every tool they have at their disposals – including public funds, the compromised Nigerian legal system and their influential non-Rivers cronies – to inflict various humiliations and annoyances on each other.
Failure of Northern Elders
ACCORDING to elder statesman, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, who was once our Permanent Representative at the United Nations, the current Northern leadership has failed woefully because it has neglected the legacy of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the late Sardauna and Premier of Northern Nigeria.
Deportation must end!
Journalists are supposed to be formidably well-informed and are expected to know more than most about what is going around them, so let me hang my head in abject shame as I admit that I only recently became aware of the fact that state governments sometimes deport disabled, homeless or impoverished “non-indigenes” to their states of origin.
Liberating child brides
LAST week and the week before, I condemned men like Senator Ahmed Sani Yerima who think it is OK to lure underage females into premature marriage.
XENOPHOBIA!
A few days ago, four Northern Governors visited their embattled Rivers State counterpart, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, to discuss the problems he has been having with various opponents. The visitors were met at Port Harcourt Airport by a baying anti-Amaechi mob, which slung rocks at their convoy
