Oyo govt approves promotion  of 48 new kings

IBADAN—AFTER reviewing the 1959 Olubadan chieftaincy declaration, the Oyo State Government has extended the initiative to other parts of the state as it approved beaded crowns and coronets for new 48 kings.

This was contained in a statement by the  State Commissioner for Information, Culture  and  Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun.

The earlier review of Olubadan declaration has become a subject of litigation as the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, some Mogajis (community leaders), High Chief Rashidi Ladoja filed different suits against it.

Arulogun said  the latest decision was taken after due consultation in a meeting with members of the Council of Obas and Chiefs.

The government said that the approval was in line with the exercise of powers conferred on the Governor by Section 28(1) of the Chiefs Law Cap 28, Vol. 1 Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria and by virtue of all other powers enabling in that behalf, stressing that the approval has been gazetted with Oyo State Notice No. 20-67 of Oyo State of Nigeria Gazette No. 3, Vol. 43 published 29thMarch, 2018 and endorsed under the Governor’s Command by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Olalekan Alli.

He stated that 26 Obas will wear beaded crown based on the approval, while the remaining 22 will be Coronet wearing Obas.

He also said that over 100 applications were received for beaded crowns from all the geopolitical zones of the state.
