IN a bid to empower the girl-child through digital innovation, Inspiring Girls in Technology Evolution, IGNITE, in partnership with US Consular recently hosted a programme for secondary schools in Port Harcourt tagged: Academic Excellence & Career Day.
The event aimed at educating and empowering young women to succeed in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths, STEM careers, also provided girls the platform to achieve their full potential.
Speakers at the event included Professor (Mrs.) Grace Awujo, the immediate past chair, Counselling Association of Nigeria, Rivers State and Dr. (Mrs) Margaret Kennedy who enjoined the participants to shun social vices, and engage themselves meaningfully through the use of technology.
According to Dr. Kennedy, IGNITE, since inception in June 2010, has organised programmes where over 1000 girls from over 40 schools within Cross River, Lagos, Enugu, Bayelsa, Benue, Kaduna, Kwara, Rivers and Katsina states, have been trained.
with new perspectives in technology, including firsthand observation and hands-on experience with creativity and collaboration in the workplace.
She also stated that IGNITE which currently has clubs in 20 schools have projection to create about 20 IGNITE clubs in each of the six geo-political zones in Nigeria by 2020.
