Yenagoa — The Police in Bayelsa State, weekend, reportedly foiled an attack on a youth activist. Vanguard learnt that the incident occurred between 7.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Azikoro suburb in the outskirts of Yenagoa, the state capital.

Though the motive of the attack could not be ascertained, but the victim, Nengi James, a pro-democracy and human rights activist has been very vociferous in calling on public functionaries at all levels in Bayelsa State to account for their stewardship.

Narrating his ordeal to Vanguard, James, who is a former Acting President of the Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, said he was relaxing in his sitting room when he was aroused by the intense barking of his security dogs.

He said he looked through the window and saw three unknown gunmen trying to force themselves into the house.

It was learnt that five other members of the gang took strategic positions to ensure that he did not escape.
Worried that his life was at stake, he said he called  the Ekeki Police Division, which responded  swiftly.

Divisional Police Officer, DPO  of  Ekeki, Mr. Nimi Iwo,  was said to have led his men in a gun duel with the suspected assassins, who fled the scene.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Eguavoen Omokpai, said he had not received any formal report on the incident.
