LAGOS—Policemen attached to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, have arrested one Aghatise Osasunmese, over his alleged involvement in an internet fraud running into millions of naira.

A statement by the Zonal Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said that the exploits of the suspect started sometime in March 29, when one Dr J. Okeke, based in United States of America, sent N5 million to his cousin named Iloka Ndubuisi, through FirstBank Nig. Plc.

“However, on March 30 Ndubuisi received an e-mail presumably from his uncle that he should pay N500,000 into an account with United Bank for Africa, belonging to the suspect with a threat that if he didn’t, he would sue him (his uncle) to court for the money he was owing him. Ndubuisi obliged without hesitation.

“He received another mail on the second day with same threat to pay another N750,000 to same account and he obliged again.

“On April 4, he received a call from one Chief Osifo, asking him to check his mail box for an instruction. At this point, he sensed something was amiss and called his uncle to confirm if he actually sent the mail.

“The uncle said he never sent any mail to him. And the matter was reported to the office of the Assistant Inspector- General of Police for investigation.”

The statement said during the course of investigation, the anti-kidnapping unit of the zone, in collaboration with the bank officials, was able to track down and arrest the suspect in Benin, Edo State.

The suspect, according to the police spokesman, confessed to the crime and stated that he was a member of  a three-man internet fraud gang.

Recovered from the suspect include a laptop, ATM cards for different banks belonging to one Blessedson Ehrahon.

In another development, one Benjamin Udoh was arrested by same  unit in connection with the recent armed robbery at Tomez Group Ltd., Amuwo Odofin, Lagos State.

He said that the suspect has confessed to the crime and his arrest has culminated into the recovery of one Mitsubishi Fuso truck, with number plates GGE 537 XP, property of the company, stolen at the scene of crime.

The suspect has since been charged to court.
