Bethel Njoku a.k.a Senator is a comedian who is known for blending wit with socially relevant jokes. The showbiz entrepreneur who is preparing for his maiden comedy show, Senator Most Distinguished in an exclusive interview with Showtime said telling vulgar jokes is a bit of a waste of time.
He believes in checking the environment before telling such jokes. Hear him:”For me, vulgar jokes are a little bit of a waste of time and creativity, that is what I think. There are times it could work for you. It’s also good to check the environment .I rarely see myself performing in the clubs so I won’t quickly try to borrow from such coffers of creativity.
I keep myself fresh by opening up my observation skills especially about what is happening in the society. If something happens now, I need to dish out an angle to it. This constantly supplies me with materials and makes me stand out. I am one act that can never be under pressure to join the bandwagon. I am the last to join the bandwagon.” He said.
He also throws more light on how the economic recession has affected the comedy industry.” The economic recession has affected the comedy industry a great deal. Companies that would call you on a good day and haggles with you over paying between 700,000 and 800,000 will tell you now that its 250,000 they can afford.
They don’t even get bothered sometimes because they feel that they have worked with your brand to a certain level and they don’t need to show you that kind of disrespect. They won’t do business with you. They will call a younger comedian. It has also made the younger ones busy and also very desperate.
Now you see them trying to get some of these jobs by all means and crack other people’s jokes. Life is all about challenges and your ability to calm the weather is what makes you relevant at the end of the day. It must not always be rosy. “
