LAGOS—NIGERIA Labour Congress, NLC, yesterday in Lagos,  announced a five- year financial support for the education of children of the late Mr. Chima Ubani,  Executive Director of Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO, about 11 years after he died in a ghastly auto crash in Potiskum, Yobe State.

Leaders of NLC also said they would be visiting Vanguard Media Limited soon, to offer similar assistance to  the children of Mr. Tunji Oyeleru, Deputy Photo Editor of Vanguard Newspapers, who died alongside Ubani in the ill-fated accident.

The duo died on September 21, 2005, in a ghastly motor accident in Potiskum, Yobe State in the heat of the struggle against the removal of fuel subsidy by the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, then president of the country.

They were going to Jos to join the then President of NLC, and now governor  of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, after a mass rally against fuel pump price hike in Maiduguri,  Borno State, before the accident.

At a brief ceremony held at the Olajuwon, Yaba, Lagos office of the Ayuba Wabba led NLC, recalled how both Ubani and Oyeleru died, saying they died in active national service.

Though Wabba acknowledged that the assistance was coming late, he insisted that it was better late than never.

Speaking, wife of late Ubani, Mrs Ochuwa Ubani, appreciated the leadership of NLC.
