The black horseman took a long ride this week, dipping his scythe randomly into the field of souls, leaving heart wrenching grief and despair in his wake. It was a dark week for Nigerian football, with the passing of former Super Eagles’ coach and NFF technical director, Shuaibu Amodu, just three days after the demise of another Super Eagles handler, Stephen Keshi.
The mass murder of 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, over the weekend has left the world in shock, just as Americans are still reeling from the mindless killing of rising musician and former The Voice contestant, Christina Grimmie, who was gunned down in Orlando, during an autograph signing after her concert. The events were apparently predicted by one Pablo Reyes on Facebook.
On the bright side, however, influential blogger and founder of 360Nobs, Noble Igwe, signed the dotted lines over the weekend, saying goodbye to his days as a single man, and HURRAY, for some good sporting news as Euro 2016 is well underway.

Stephen Keshen Departs
Former Super Eagles defender and erstwhile coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi passed away on June 7 in Benin City after a heart attack. He was 54. Keshi began playing the beautiful game as a pupil of St Finbarrs College, Lagos, helping them win the 1977 Lagos State Principal’s Cup.
Keshi played in five different African Cup of Nations tournaments, captaining the Super Eagles to their second continental success in 1994 in Tunisia. He was instrumental to Nigeria’s maiden appearance at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the US where they reached the second round before losing to Italy. Keshi became coach of the Nigerian National Team in 2011 and served in that capacity till July 2015.
Shaibu Amodu pass away too
Perhaps it’s time to carry placards or something… How can 2 Nigerian sports icons die in one week? First Stephen Keshi, and days after, Shaibu Amodu? The four-time Super Eagles coach died in his sleep on June 10 after complaining of pains in his chest. He was 58.
Amodu played for Dumez and Niger Tornadoes as a striker, before managing a number of club sides in Nigeria, including BCC Lions, El-Kanemi Warriors, and Shooting Stars. He also managed South Africa’s Orlando Pirates.
He coached the Super Eagles more times than any other coach, having led the national team five times. His first appointment was Super Eagles Coach in 2001 and guided the team to secure qualification for the 2002 World Cup only to be sacked months to the tournament. He returned as technical director of Nigeria’s national teams in May 2013.
Muhammadu Ali laid to rest
Boxing legend and three time world Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali was laid to rest early this week, in his hometown of Louiseville, Kentucky. A two-hour funeral procession took his body past places where the legendary boxer spent his formative years: his childhood home, his high school, the first boxing gym where he trained.
The World’s Greatest was then laid to rest early in the afternoon in a private ceremony at Cave Hill Cemetery. Actor Will Smith, who played the title role in the 2001 film “Ali,” and former heavyweight champions Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson served as pallbearers. Muhammad Ali had personally chose the plot where he wished to be buried in a tranquil, secluded corner of the historic Cave Hill Cemetery on the outskirts of Louisville, Adieu, Champ
Murder of most mindless
49 dead, 53 injured. That’s the body count from Omar Mateen’s rampage at Pulse gay bar, Orlando, Florida. In what has been described as the worst mass shooting in America’s history, the former security guard carried an assault rifle and a pistol into the packed Pulse club about 2 a.m. Sunday and opened fire, after calling 911 to pledge his allegiance to ISIS. Following a 3 hour standoff, police crashed into the nightclub and killed Mateen. Our hearts are with the grieving families.
