THE President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (TF), Sani Ndanusa has hailed junior tennis sensation, Michael Oshewa for winning a silver medal in the boys U-14 category at the 39th International Tennis Federation and Confederation of Africa Tennis Junior Championship in South Africa.
Osewa was beaten to the gold medal by Damien Laporte of the Seychelles, who triumphed in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.
Speaking from the court side in Pretoria, Ndanusa said he was hopeful that the rising form of Nigerian juniors signalled a positive direction of Nigeria tennis, noting that the fruits of the progress would soon cascade into the senior players.
“We are making progress at the junior level and hopefully the seniors would soon catch the bug. I am confident that our tennis players will soon take the shine off their football counterparts because there was a time in this country when our tennis players earned more and lived better than footballers
“The fear of the north Africans is now a thing of the past for us. Our immediate task is to complement our performance here which is the best in Nigeria’s history with a bigger support for our junior players especially now that we are back in the Davis Cup after missing for about three years.”
